The 1st Annual Progress in Bloom took place on May 21, 2011, beginning with a rally on the campus of Normandy Senior High School. Hundreds of community residents, stakeholders and volunteers planted nearly 2,000 Rose Verbena seedlings throughout the geographic footprint of Normandy School District. Progress in Bloom was organized to commemorate the completion of the 24:1 Initiative Community Plan and to visually demonstrate unity between the 24 municipalities served by the school district reflecting their vision of strong communities, engaged families and successful children.
Progress In Bloom celebrates the efforts of stakeholders from the 24 contiguous municipalities coming together to build on their communities strengths and address common issues. Despite the threat of bad weather and doomsday, Current World Record Holder and Four-Time Olympian Jackie Joyner Kersee and Beyond Housing President/CEO Chris Krehmeyer got everybody fired-up, stretched out and ready to plant. Residents and elected officials worked side-by-side with volunteers on what turned out to be a beautiful day! The day came to a wonderful conclusion with lunch and music at the beautiful Millennium Student Center on the campus of UM-St. Louis. As a token of appreciation, participants in Progress in Bloom were given a Rose Verbena & Wildflower Seed packet. Click here for simple planting instructions.
Progress In Bloom was sponsored by Express Scripts, Emerson, Midwest BankCentre, UM-St. Louis Students of Service, United Way, Missouri Wildflower Nursery, Missouri Women In Trades, St. Louis Composting and Wayside Community Garden. Thank you for your support!
