Hello, my name is Chris Krehmeyer, President and CEO of Beyond Housing and your host for New Kid on the Blog. This blog is provided as a community service to educate, enlighten and empower people concerning housing, the foreclosure crisis, community development, poverty and any other topic relevant to the mission of Beyond Housing. Beyond Housing reserves the right to approve any comment posted in response to my blogs and will not post any comment that contains offensive or suggestive language. To paraphrase Dr. Martin Luther King, we can disagree without being disagreeable. I am looking forward to exchanging ideas with you.

I started my blog last week and just created my twitter account (Chriskbeyond) today. I know some are asking why? Many say, "I just don't understand". My response is that these are new forms of communication to share the work of the Beyond Housing and its importance. It is my hope to engage more people in a conversation about why what we do is important. Why the people we serve simply want a chance for a better life. Why we truly can be successful at alleviating the consequences of poverty.
There is no magic pill to make the work of producing affordable housing, preventing foreclosures, providing services for families easy and simple. But, if in some small way, using a blog and a twitter account can expand the universe of those who know and support our efforts, then count me in. I am in no way tech-savvy nor do I run in a circle of really tech-savvy folks; but, I do know lots and lots of people utilize blogs and twitter accounts. I am willing to bet most of them don't know about Beyond Housing or the field we are in.
I am ever willing to try new things to help more families. So, I dive in head first into the seemingly strange world of blogging and tweeting (is that how it is spelled?) I hope I can both share and learn in the new world.

Re: Blogging, Tweeting, What am I Doing?
I work within the Maplewood Richmond Heights area doing many home visits and always have families needing housing. What formula do you use to figure out rent. Also what other criteria do the families need? My family lives two doors up from one of your properties and are willing to help fill and work with beyond housing. Thanks for your help Christy Kramlich 378-1774

No, you are not tech savvy, but you do have a tech savvy son who can help you reach a lot of people online ^__^ I'll circulate your blog through my social networking sites and I'm sure that if you post some provocative questions that you will get many thoughtful responses from some of my friends. Love you Dad.

Re: Blogging, Tweeting, What am I Doing?
I have been trying very hard no to engage in this “blogging thing” new way of communication, however, if this is the way to bring more people into our world, then I’ll take a chance too. Chris, I don’t think that a pill exist to end poverty or to address all the many issues that many families are confronted with everyday. No to be provocative, I think that it is important to promote our work where we are trying to address the needs of many; but even more importantly is to acknowledge that poor people did not choose to be poor; many children did not have a choice where they were born, many women do not know any different but been in abusive situations as their mothers and grandmothers. I can go on and on! There are so many different issues that can keep a person in the same vicious circle. Many times, it is not just services that one may need but just someone that believes that he/she can do better…..

Seila,
So what should we be doing from a public policy standpoint and then at the local level?

Re: Blogging, Tweeting, What am I Doing?
Chris: I love the fact that you have embraced the new technology to reach out to volunteers, supporters and clients of your organization. There are some great tools out there. LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Activerain are my big four that I focus on. To understand the power and growth of these tools, you only have to see that Facebook has 65 million unique visitors and Twitter had growth year over year of 1352% last year. It gives you some idea of the size of this communication revolution. As always, you are on the cutting edge and doing whatever it takes to get out your message.
