Child's Play, Part II: Church Brings Carnival to Day Care Center
Children also need someone to play with. As a fitting follow-up to the playhouse donated on June 8th, more than 20 young people involved with the Youth Ministry at The Church of St. Michael and St. George made a return visit to Jennifer's Little Acre Day Care Center in north St. Louis for a carnival and lunch with the children. The day's events capped off an entire week of community service that included a volunteer project with Beyond Housing on Wednesday, June 25th.

Child's Play: Church Donates Playhouse to Day Care Center
Aimee has certainly gone beyond housing. Her story embodies what our mission is all about. Aimee is a single mother with two teen age daughters and an eleven year old son. She is also the caretaker for her father since her mother passed away. Aimee dreamed of buying a home and heard about our Homeownership Program through her son, who participated in the football program at our Pagedale Family Support Center. She purchased a five bedroom home for her family in the City of St. Louis and closed the deal on the anniversary of her mother’s death. Aimee’s story is chronicled and well illustrated in our “2006 Year in Review” annual report, which includes a photo of Aimee on the front porch of her new home. But, if you open the door on that front porch and look beyond housing as Aimee has done, you will see and hear what keeps her going…children at play in a thriving, state-licensed day care center.
Children need something to play on. With the leadership and support of St. Michael’s Houses, members of the Youth Ministry at The Church of St. Michael and St. George built a playhouse of hand-fashioned logs and presented it to Aimee at Jennifer’s Little Acre Day Care. “I could not have planned anything more special. The students that were present on Sunday were so enthusiastic and really felt good about what they were donating…and that is a true gift”, said Marty Chapman, Youth Ministry Coordinator.
Children at play generate laughter and chatter as well as occasional tears. If you know Aimee, some of those tears come from her gratitude for the journey that she and her family have taken…a journey that Beyond Housing has been privileged to share with them.
